Description & History

West County Reads! is a volunteer community collaborative of individuals, businesses and organizations working in collaboration with parents, schools, libraries, and community groups in West Contra Costa County to improve literacy outcomes for young children. WCR was founded in 2001. Our partners are listed in the column to the left.

*Our goal is to have families read to their children 20 minutes per day.*

What we have accomplished:

  • Collected and distributed over 25,000 books
  • Established and supplied "take it or leave it" bookshelves at 14 elementary schools
  • Sponsored well-attended literacy events at local libraries to make parents more aware of available resources
  • Published and distributed free literacy events calendars featuring the inspirational art of West County children
  • Rallied the community to address local literacy needs
  • Collaborated with teachers to solicit hundreds of volunteers to read to children in local schools
